Leylandi high hedge
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.36 PM
Hi I have a neighbour with 14 feet high Leyland hedge . He left it to grow for 3 years then I asked him to reduce the height but only got 2 feet taking of the top. He said he couldn't have anymore taken off but gave me no reason. Would there be a reason for not reducing the height further I.e would it kill the trees with shock or is it case of an awkward neighbour. The leylandi looks healthy with no brown patches so if you can tell me reasons why these trees shouldn't be cut much then any answers would be appreciated.

Leylandii should really be cut once a year or twice in some cases, it can grow up to a meter annually so leaving it for 3 years is extreme without having it trimmed back. As a rule of thumb for most plants, you can actually cut back a 1/3 annually and do the same the following year. Just take into consideration of birds nesting in spring and possibly summer as these trees make the perfect nesting place for wild life.

I think when approaching neighbours about they're hedges and trees try the tactful approach giving your reasons why you would like it done maybe offer to share costs or take the job on board yourself using a professional with they're consent and guidance. It's not a problem to prune a Leylandii hedge although be mindful not to prune too hard to where it starts to brown or can become patchy.
