Do we need planning permission for a boundary wall in a conservation area?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

We live in a conservation area in Lambeth. The house is semi-detached and the front garden has no defined border between us and the attached neighbour. We'd like to put up a short (1 metre) wall to separate the gardens, with the wall terminating in a new brick pier at the front boundary of the property. The existing front railings would be terminated into this new pier. The wall and pier would exactly match that between us and the non-attached neighbours. Would we need planning permission for this short boundary wall? It isn't possible to ask the council, you have to apply in order to find out if it is needed it seems! Many thanks in advance. Ben

In a conservation area I would say yes, ring your local council to check

Ben, it is difficult to give you accurate advice without seeing the property. However, in any instance where you are building forward of the front elevation you will require planning permission, especially being in a conservation area. Given the fact you are looking to construct it from brick as well as building on the party wall line it would be heavily advised to consult you local council as well as your neighbour to insure they are happy. Better to ask permission then for forgiveness when it comes to planning.
