Hi. All you need is a watered down matt emulsion. Personally, I use ‘Armstead Contract Matt’ as you can pick a 10l tub up for £20. Make sure you water this down to around 60-40 in the paint’s favour. A lot of people go 50-50 but as long as you’re in between the 2 you’ll be fine. Make sure you do not use a silk emulsion as it won’t grip to the plaster and will just peel off over a short period of time. Once the ‘mist coat’ is on your walls are ready to coat properly. Hope this helps, regards, A.P. Bussey Painting & Decorating.

You can use a plaster primer but in the 20 years I've been a painter we have just used a mist coat. Witch is some watered down matt emulsion for your first coat then apply 2 more coats of emulsion on top.

Hi, It is highly important that the new plaster is 100% dry so please check this before you begin. For newly plastered walls you need to do what is called a "mist coat" which is basically a watered down matt emulsion. Use any emulsion paint and water it down by around 20-30% then apply to all the plastered surfaces. Do not worry about the streaky finish as all you are trying to do here is to seal the plaster. A word of warning, mist coating can be a fairly messy process due to the runny paint so ensure to cover any area well. Once mist coat has been done, allow to dry (it will dry quickly due to being watered down) and then you are ready to paint with emulsion. Give the walls 2 coats with a good quality emulsion making sure to adhere to the recommended drying times between coats. Hope this helps ? Regards BCA Property Services

Hi i advocate paint for new plaster rather than any old matt paint watered down. There are many out there some better than others, but for you initial mist coats use paint for new plaster. It obliterates better than any old matt, and can be sanded easily if any prep is required between coats. It cheap too!
