Is it a legal requirement to have a fire door between a kitchen and a hall?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

I am doing a renovation on my flat. At the moment there is a door between the kitchen and the hall / stairwell. It's in a narrow corridor and I would much rather there was no door there. Am I able to remove it and just leave an open corridor between the stairwell and the kitchen or is it a fire requirement that there is a fire door there? Thanks in advance.

Hi , The response above from RC is not entirely correct. The question relates to Part B of the Building Regulations. There are various different ways one can maintain compliance with this regulation. In simplest terms, yes, a FD30 as described should be retained, however there are other approaches. Open plan apartments for example rely on other measures to achieve compliance and much is to do with the proximity of things like the actual kitchen and the overall space and possibly travel distances. If you get in touch with and organise a visit from an Approved Inspector they will give you other options. Best Wishes Lee Davidson RIBA
