Brick or replace frame of small window in cooker hot zone

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

We have a small window (approx 0.5m x 1m) above where the previous owners had a cooker that has a wooden frame. This is the only place in the kitchen where we can realistically put a cooker at the moment and because the frame is within the hot zone we would either need to replace the frame with a fire/heat proof material, or just brick it up. (the house is externally rendered and the wall is likely to have a small cavity) and approximately how long would it take to complete building and dry? Is there any suitable window frame material that could potentially sit partially above (40cm) a cooker? Thank you

Hi there, in your situation I can think of a couple of solutions, you could change your window for alluminium as long as you have it as a opening sash as I would of thought it will get warm in that area, or as you have said you could remove the window and have it blocked back up, if you was to use rapid cement you could have it bricked back up in a day not a problem, but also another option is have you thought having secondary glazing on the inside hope this has helped in some way

Hi I used to survey kitchens for a v. large kitchen company and policy was simply never have a cooker or hob under a window or even near. Several reasons ,draughts blow out gas flames, sunlight can impair visually plus your stated one so I would brick up and you might as well have an externally ducted extractor or relocate cooker sooner rather than later. Cheers :)
