Replacing a ceiling rose

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi There, I have bought a couple of new ceiling lights to replace the basic plastic white fitting that I currently have. The wiring is has multiple live, neutral and earth wires while the fitting on the new light has only one connector for live, neutral and earth - will sounds like a daft question but do I just fit all the wires from the ceiling into the respective connection on the new light? Thanks John M

A friend asked me the same question the other day. As well as the problem you have come up against of fitting all of the wires into the small terminals, is also determining whether all of the cables are actually labelled up correctly. Blacks/Blues aren't always neutrals. I explained this to my good friend with a diagram to match, however she quickly realised that this was maybe a bit out of her reach and asked me to go and have a look. An easy, small fix for a professional. However a potential danger for a novice DIYer. Sometimes it is better to bite the bullet, post the job and pay the small price. Hope this helps Carl Thomas

Not a good idea, I would get an electrician to do it.

In short yes. But the fitting you have bought has been made for the wider EU market where its the norm to just have a single L, N and E conductor. For that reason its better to hire a professional especially as its a sub £20 job.

Hi there I would advice you to get an electrical to change your ceiling lights it a quick job. And would no the correct procedure on safe isolation. Because the wiring could be three plated at the old light or at the switch and it would be difficult for you to understand. Rodene
