Door opening in single skin brick wall

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.15 PM

I am planning to make an opening between two rooms in a single skin brick wal. That wall is in the middle of, and currently only supports the ends of joists supporting the floor of a landing above. By the time I introduced a concrete lintel, there would only be two courses of bricks between the top of the lintel and the underside of the joists. Please correct me if wrong but, It would seem more sensible to me, to support the landing on props, remove the top course of bricks, and instal the lintel directly under the joists. I would then replace those two courses of brick, UNDER THE LINTEL, with timber stud and plasterboard. Plastered afterward to make good. Installing the lintel directly over the new door lining, resulting in only two courses of new brickwork on top, (I'd have to support the joists and remove ALL the brickwork across the opening in practice?) would result in a very insubstantial support for the joists wouldn't it? Sorry for the long question, but better ALL the queried info than a long thread of questions and answers?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. It would be fine to leave them in. But no harm in taking them out. If you are happy to timber it out.

You can take the bricks out but I would rather leave the bricks in as both walls would be tied in together. Also when making good with plastering will be easier as you will be bonding with the same material. Going from brick to plasterboard then brick may cause cracks in the finished plaster.
