Insulation

External insulation to a solid wall construction property

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

We own a 1930's build dormer bungalow which has a solid wall construction. You can make the home warm but when the heating goes off it will cool quite quickly due to wall construction. We are considering insulation of the walls from the outside as this would also allow us to have the walls rendered smooth (currently unattractive painted concrete stipple). If anyone has any advice on the course of action we would need to take, points that need to be taken into account and any pitfalls that need to be avoided - much appreciated. We will obtain quotes from professionals registered with mybuilder.com but would like some info/advice ahead of this. Thanks

Hi, I believe if you look into it there may be grants available to help you with this. The biggest issue you will have is whether you have enough overhang on your eaves to accommodate for the added thickness the insulating will create to the wall. An alternative option is to insulate from the inside, allowing you to reposition radiators, sockets etc however this will reduce floor space by about 120mm on external walls. I hope his helps. Dave

Hi, the system I would recommend is the a EWI Weber system where a section of EPS is fixed to the external face which a number of different render finished can then be applied onto. The thickness of EPS varies but personally I would not fix less than 40mm. The only thing to bare in mind is that obviously the addition of the insulation could finish proud of the cills on windows and doors, these could need extending.
