Can Wide T & G pine wood floorboards be fitted to a solid concrete floor

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

We are considering having our badly worn lounge carpet approx 24ft x 12foot replaced by real wood tongue & groove floorboards.Do not want laminate flooring. The floor is solid (concrete). Can T & G be laid on a solid floor & if so what other preparation is necessary.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If your concrete slab has a damp membrane underneath then you can lay the floorboards. It would be a good idea to apply a specialist thin foam underlay (normally used with laminates) this will provide some level of cushioning as well as some insulation. Good luck with your project. (Make sure about the damp membrane)

this is a specialist job, the moisture content of the subfloor will need to be under 75% rh which will need testing by a professional. you will need a surface dpm and a high compression screed which the solid wood flooring can be bonded to. you do not float solid oak floor over a unprepared concrete floor as this will fail on a spectacular level. do not listen to the advice given above. you can float a lock system enginereed floor on a underlay but the concrete will still need to be prepped properly. please see the bwfa website or the flooring forum for the correct method, hope this stops you making a very expensive mistake, my advice , get professionals in .

Hi. Yes you can, and although its a little more involved than laying laminate it straighforward enough for a competent d.i.y'er. The moisture level of the subflloor needs to be measured( meters can be hired) The concrete floor will need to be levelled. There are levelling compounds available that are stronger for this application, a good flooring supplier/ tile supplier should be able to sell and advise you on this. Solid wood t&g flooring must be glued( as per manafacturers instructions) and the correct adhesive purchased. There are a plethora of very good ( free) websites that can guide you through all of this and give you all the technical specifications ( moisture levels, tolerances in level of the sub-floor etc) If youre employing someone to do it then any good floor layer, carpenter, handyman can achieve perfect results. Its maybe still in your interests however to gen up on the prep/laying as ive mentioned
