Plywood under lino

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Im replacing my bathroom flooring. A number of the floor boards are uneven so i will be removing the nails and replacing with new screws. I have some 6mm thick interior/exterior plywood to lay on top of the boards and a roll of lino to lay on top. Regards the plywood should i just lay it flat over the floor or should it be nailed/screwed down? The flooring at the moment creaks a lot and im hoping to help with that also. Also should i treat the plywood with anything before its finished or leave it as it is Thanks in advance

Start in a corner and lay the first piece of plywood as tightly as possible. Secure with screws every 15cm along the edge, Also fix with screws at 15cm centres, in other words, at 15cm intervals around the edge and in lines across the centre of the sheet as well, The screws should go into the floorboards but not through them. Butt joint the sheets tightly and continue laying them across the floor, If sheets of ply need to be cut to fit, use a panel saw for straight cuts and a profile gauge and jigsaw to make cuts around architraves or pipes

Totally agree with the other awnser. 6 inch centres screwed will give you a very firm stregthened sub floor. If you're laying vinyl, be sure to put each screw in straight and level, considering countersinking, so that the heads of the screws do not protrude above the ply in any way
