Can I replace G24 Pendants with GU10 Downlights?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

We have moved into a house with a loft extension, which has 3 G24 pendant lamps dangling down from an already low ceiling. This means I hit my head on them every time I'm up there! Is it possible to replace with GU10 downlights? As far as I can tell, the G24 is a 240V fitting so no problems there, but I have read something about 'ballast' which I have no idea about. Also, why would they have been fitted in the first place, there must be a good reason as afaik they are not the most common fitting. Just trying to get an idea of options before putting the job up along with a few electrical ones. thanks Mark

Very easy answer. In my experience the pendant will be fixed to a joist or truss. If that is the case then the recessed fitting will need to be moved to enable it to be recessed. This means probably extending the cable that feeds the existing fitting with a junction box. Maybe some patching up required? GU10 fittings are a thing of the past ! My advice would to install an LED COB ( Chip on board )fitting that uses maybe 5 watts and produce so much more light.
