New Property - TV Wall Fitting Query
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.17 PM
Hi There, I have just moved into a new build property (top floor flat) and am looking to mount my TV on one of the external walls. Despite expecting there to be studs in the wall, I cannot find any when making several holes with a drill. This concerns me as I do not want to mount the TV onto plasterboard as it will not be secure enough to hold a 40 inch TV. I would be really grateful if anyone could share their immediate advice. Thanks in Advance, Leonie

Hi Leonie,
As this is a new build and also top floor flat, I suppose your flat is directly under the roof. By the new regulations, there should be certain requirements of the U value (measure of the heat transmission through a building part such as a wall or window). In order to achieve this sometimes builder use insulation stick to the plasterboard and they glued this board directly to the wall, or frame with plywood. As this insulation could be around 50mm or more thick you cannot reach any solid surface behind. If you are in a doubt that the plasterboard will not hold the TV, I will suggest part of the plasterboard with insulation behind the TV to be cut and removed. Then, piece of plywood to be installed into the frame or wall and new piece of plasterboard to be fitted on top and make it good. You could fix the TV frame to the plasterboard and plywood. In case behind is a solid brick work, the job is much easier. The TV brackets could be fixed with metal anchors or metal bars with chemical fixing direct to the brick wall trough the plasterboard. I hope this will help.

Hi Leonie, Chepine has described things very well, you essentially either need some pattressing installed, that's a solid piece of ply fixed between the vertical studs or you may be able to find, with a stud detector, the vertical studs first and then you can adjust the position of you tv to suit. Best of luck
