I have bought a oven is it okay on a 13A socket
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.38 PM
Hi. The Oven I have bought has a total electricity load, W:1850 but on the User manual it says I need a min 15A fuse. I am confused because 240v, 1850w, means only 7.7amps My question is do you think a 13A fuse will be okay why would they put a higher fuse surely that must be less safe ? I never used this site before so not sure if this is the right way to do this but had two answers both confirming what I thought but just wanted to check not an electrician, so thanks for the replies. I can and have used over now with out worrying thanks again.

Hello I would suggest that it would be fine if the information you have given is correct.
The truth is the point of a fuse is to protect the cable so as an example.
A lighting circuit has a cable that if clipped direct it’s maximum
load is 13 Amps this is dependent on the cables surroundings and if it is covered in insulation.
As a rule lighting circuits have a 6 Amp circuit breaker.
So basically the circuit breaker will operate before the cable burns out.
The fuse protects the cable.

Simples!!!
1850 w is a very low wattage for an oven, especially if it houses a grill element?
If that's the deal then 1.5mm three core flex. 13 amp fuse in the plug top and plug it straight into the adjacent socket. The largest fuse you can get to fit in a plug top is 13amp not 15amp.
Trust me that'll be fine.
