Safe to remove chimney breast on semi-detached home when neighbour has too?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

Is it safe for us to remove entire chimney breast on our semi-detached home when adjoining neighbour has also had their entire chimney breast removed? Considering removing our entire chimney breast [CB] to add more room to living space [very small home] - yet recently discovered that our neighbours also removed their entire CB a decade ago without our knowledge. We received no Party Wall consideration from them to complete this work. That aside... I’m wondering how safe it is for us to remove our CB under these circumstances? I do not want to destabilise / endager the structure of our or our neighbour’s home. I am in the process of commissioning a surveyor to manage Party Wall matters and already have involvement from a structural engineer and architect. The more I get into this - the more complex things seem to appear.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Best option is to remove the entire chimney from the top down but sometimes chimneys can be supporting in which case it could either be not possible without compromising the strength of the building or be very expensive. Hope this is helpful. Tom Markham.
