Insulation

Can insulation cause so much condensation that it can cause a ceiling to collapse?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Hello there, First of all, I'm going to take you back in time. Ten months ago, to be precise. I reported missing ridge tiles and loose field tiles to my landlord. Who came out to look at the roof and looking was all he did... (Yes, I should have reported him to the local council a long time ago. I hold my hands up to that.) Fast forward to the more recent past. My son's bedroom ceiling partially collapsed. According to the landlord, this is due to the attic insulation causing condensation and damp. Bearing in mind the missing roof tiles and that we have a dehumidifier and run it for at least a couple of hours each day, how likely is it that we have caused this problem? (Apart from being negligent in allowing the landlord to get away with doing nothing. I fully admit that even the leaking roof is entirely or mostly to blame, it was my responsibility to report him.)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think your insulation did not get condensation at all. I think your insulation got full of water because of your roof leaking and if water goes on it it will soak it like sponge and get heavier and havier and make your ceiling to collapse.

insulation if installed correctly stops condensation, your landlord id talking through a whole in his body NOT HIS MOUTH heat rises stopping in the loft if their is no insulation, if its not breathable felt and their is insufficient airflow when the temperature drops outside the hot air hits the cold felt tuning to condensation dripping back into the loft & soaking everything , just the same as a hole in the roof will let water in this soaks into the insulation until the plasterboard can no longer take the weight causing the ceiling to collapse. at the least it is neglect. a good solicitor could probably make a case against your landlord I do know people who have lost their property through neglect of their tenants rights. good luck alex
