Slate underlay membrane
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.35 PM
Hey! I'm looking for a breathable membrane to fix to my roof prior to slating. I live in Scotland, so the membrane will be placed directly on top of the wooden sarking and then the slates on top of that. The membrane will need to be an all zones type. There will not be any battens between the membrane and the slates. Any advice would be much appreciated. Angus

hi Angus
to put membrane on without putting some form of lathe to attach the tiles to will achieve nothing and very well may cause your new roof to leak as you will be creating two moisture points every time you attach a slate multiply that by the amount of slates and all you are achieving is creating a pin cushion effect in your new membrane which defeats the pupose
the membrane I personally use is tyvak. although the best is roof shield.
unless their is a reason for not putting in lathes strongly suggest you install lathes/ batons to fix your slates to.
good luck alex
