how to fix cracks in plastered walls

hi I have had kitchen recently plastered and cracks have appeared in the walls. not big but longish. I was advised to run something sharp along the crack and make it bigger then fill it wit filler prior to painting it. Any advice welcome thanks

Run a standlyknife down the crack making it bigger you need to open it up then fill it rub down to smooth finish then paint
