Hairline plaster cracks all over house

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

Hello brought a house 10 months ago 1930s mid terraced Every room had been reskimmed by previous owners but now finding hairline cracks in everyroom in the house they go up, down , side ways zigzag just so unsightly. Only a few areas sound slighlty hollow but most sound solid. Any ideas as to the problem and the cure? Thanks

basically what you have is dead plaster. this is where the plaster in sections is no longer stuck to the wall. the cracks form because it is pulling away from the plaster that is not. if you are going to do this your self then u will need a 4" nail or similar. make a hole at the end of each crack to stop it traveling any further. then run the nail across the crack creating a gouge 2mm is plenty. then fill with a flexible filler and sand. the appearance will depend on the effort put in. correct way is to remove all existing plaster and backing re sheet and skim.

Hi. I see this all the time in older properties that have had a plaster re-skim. You can fill the cracks ( widening them if required to provide a key) sand, re-paint.
