what order to do the house in floors and walls

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

I need most rooms reskimmed kitchen/dining hall and living room especially ceilings as have unsightly cracks in as is a period house but I am planning on replacing floorboards to tiles on the ground floor hall and dining room however I can only afford to do one project at a time should I do the floors first or the walls first or is it best to do one room at a time? How can I level the floor boards if the cellar is underneath ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, I would do the walls and ceilings first you dont want to walk over a brand new floor to plaster as it needs time to dry in,I would personally do a room at a time then you keep the disruption down to a mininum and can move furniture to another room while you finish the other, usually i would do the kitchen ,bathroom, lounge then bedrooms in that order ok. Hope that helps Mark As for the floor i would take up the floor boards and string a line from one end of the floor joists to the other then screw in new timber joists to the existing ones and raise to the string level and do that straight across the whole floor .

In regards to the order of the work I agree with mj. Plastering can cause a hell of a mess and therefore should be tackled first. Also the order of room from mj is the best as it will allow you to complete room which are most often used first. Your flooring should be the last thing to go down as it will take a lot of beating whilst the projects are going on. In regards to the cracks in your ceiling, ensure the plaster treats that properly and does not simply skim of it to hide it. Best of luck with the project. P_P
