Shower rail valve leaking

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

The valve at the bottom of a shower rail is slowly leaking. There's the word "ULTRA" on it, probably the brand. A picture of the valve is here: https://ibb.co/kHL6hc - also shows where the leak is. As far as I can tell, this valve is one of those that cannot be 'repacked' - it seems to be solid made from one piece of metal. I have tried tightening the whole copper part to the stainless part, but it doesn't seem to be tightening or move whatsoever. What would fixing this leak involve? The important bit is: Would I be able to undo the thread, put PTFE in and screw it in again, without leaking water from the rail all over the place? Would I need to empty the system first?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Looking to the picture the valve is leaking from the thread. If you close the valve you should be able to undo the copper part of the valve, fit new PTFE to the thread and try to tight it. If the problem persist you need to drain the system off, change the valve and refill. its not a mayor job and anyone with basic instruction can do it itself. To drain the system close the main cold water and open the drain valve to drain the system. drain valve should be on to the last radiator of your system that normally is on ground floor. or you can drain from any radiator and after refilling do the radiator bleeding. keep an eye to the pressure gauge to the boiler that the pressure should not exceed 1.5bar i. do all this with the boiler turned off. regards roberto

Personally I wouldn't attempt to fix the leak without the system drained down first. It would probably be worth just replacing both valves whilst the system is drained as well.
