New light fitting to old wiring

The old wiring consists of 3 single black wires, including the switched live. 3 red/black cables, one of which is permanently live. When we put all red together, all black together apart from switched live that is going to the live of the lamp. Nothing happened. Where are we going wrong? This is a 2 switch light. I have a picture but unable to post it on here.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello Maria,
From what I have read of the question I can see you are making the classic mistake of assuming all red and all blacks go together, this is not the case, in most cases 1 of the black wires (That should be labeled with a red mark) is the return live from the switches,this is to be put in the one side of the lamp and the blacks on the other side as mentioned in the last answer visit http://homewiringguide.com/page4.htm.
If your unsure it is always worth consulting an electrician.
