Insulation

Draught through kitchen. Very cold behind low level kitchen cabinets

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.35 PM

Hi, We have recently moved into a house with a open plan kitchen and diner. We have noticed a very cold draught that runs through our kitchen. I have blocked up obvious places where the drafts are coming through like old air bricks etc but the kitchen is still very cold. The low level kitchen cabinets are extremely cold and I can feel cold air coming from under my washing machine. I have removed the kick board and have rightly or wrongly filled the gaps very tightly with loft insulation for the time being. This has improved the issue slighty but more needs to be done. As previous owners made the room open plan the back door was removed and bricked up. I am thinking maybe that has not been insulated. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I can do? Any help would be much appreciated. Many Thanks Ricky

Hi Ricky, What type of flooring do you have? Is it timber joists and boarding, or concrete block and beam? You would most possibly have a void under your flooring for ventilation, so by blocking up your vents will only cause damp, condensation and further internal problem's. You will get draughts in you house because of older ventilation styles below floor level. There are quite a few solvable methods. If you have a basement and access to your underside flooring then you can insulate and plasterboard. You can also have cavity wall insulation inserted and seal all gaps where the skirting board meets the floor. Also where a suspended flooring is present you should install a thermal or insulated material before floor covering.

It sounds like you've taken some initial steps to address the cold draught in your open plan kitchen and diner. Considering the removal of the back door, it's possible that insufficient insulation in that area is contributing to the issue. I recommend checking the insulation in the bricked-up area and reinforcing it if necessary. Additionally, ensure that all windows are properly sealed, and inspect other potential gaps or openings. If the problem persists, consulting with a professional insulation specialist could help identify and address any hidden sources of the draught.
