Hi,
I am buying a house, the exterior of which is covered by pebbledash, and I am not sure whether it's best to have it painted or wait until I am able to have it re-rendered.
Most houses I have seen with painted pebbledash did not look great, as the texture was too profound. I did notice a couple though where you could still see some of the original texture, but overall the surface was a lot smoother than the other houses.
Is this effect possible to achieve by painting e.g. using multiple coatings? (If not, then maybe the houses I saw were actually re-rendered but with a non-smooth render).
Thank you very much for your help.

Edit: Thank you for the reply below. My partner and I knocked on the door today of one of the houses which had a better result but you could still see some of the texture and asked what technique had been used. It was in fact a new render, just not a smooth one. As such, I think we'll wait and save up until we are ready to re-render the house. (We actually find most painted pebbledash houses worse than the ones the original pebbledash, especially when the paint stops being fresh)
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi, its seems a matter of either or. Painting peeble dash will not on any way smooth it out. Any paint is just a protective weatherproof coating. Which can be coloured to alter the aesthetic appeal. So wether its, white, yellow or even pink. It is the same thing tinted to personal taste.
Re-rendering is a far more extensive and costly affair. This would allow you the option of changing the texture and colour of your exterior. You can have from a flat surface to a rougher surface dependent on which finish you choose. If you can live with the rougher surface you have and paint it. It will be considerably less expensive, but would be pointless if later on you are thinking about re-rendering.
I'd recommend to look around when you are out and about at similar house to your own. See what other people have done, and which you prefer. Then make your choice accordingly. It is always better to make sure before you take any action, as make do for now never does work. Invest wisely invest once. Hope this helps.

Hi there,
It will obviously look a lot smoother and have a more modern finish if you had the external walls re rendered. And the added factor of making the property more insulated, I would recommend a k rend system or parex monochouce is highly recommended. But obviously the cost is a lot higher than painting the original pebble dash finish you have at the moment. To brighten it up and make it look more presentable for now I would use a dulux trade wheathershield smooth masonary paint. It has a quick drying time being shower resistant Within 30 minutes which you need with the weather in the uk and is guaranteed outside for 15 years the paint also contains an fungicide inhibitor so will stay reasonably clean. Should cover 10m2 on average per litre but depends how rough the pebble dash is. If it’s a smooth ish finish probably would get more like 16-18 m2 per litre I would look at paying around £20 for a 5 litre tin from the merchants.
Wouldn’t recommend doing multiple coatings to try and smooth it out. You will be buying a lot of paint and will not improve the rough finish. Save your money !! and get re rendered with a proper render system .(insulation, beads, mesh, render etc)
Hope this helps you out a little
Kind regards
