Could I build brick pillars to replace wood porch pillars

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.17 PM

I am trying to think of a way to replace my front porch pillars with something other than wood. Would two brick pillars be suitable.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Mr John, of course you can built brick pillars instead of wood, but will depend on how your porch design is, usualy you can built the new brick pillar around old ones, and leave them inside. All the best George

Brick pillars would certainly be suitable replacements for timber posts but in either case they would both depend on having adequate foundations / pads to take the roof loadings . Encasing existing posts in brickwork is not a great idea as original timber will rot over time and you will have a brick pier larger than needed.. If it is a case that your existing posts have rotted at the base you could cut out deteriorated section and fit a galvanised shoe with load bearing pin which needs to be chemi fixed into the foundation. This will give you a clear gap so further water damage is not an issue
