Adapting house of elderly couple

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.17 PM

My grandparents live in a 1930s semi with bathroom and bedrooms upstairs. They are struggling with the stairs now and would like to redesign the downstairs to accommodate them. I have a pretty good idea of how we could do it without adding an extension. This would include blocking off part of the kitchen to add a wet room and blocking up the archway between the living room and dining room to create a separate bedroom. My questions are what planning permission would i need and also who do i get to draw up plans? Also are there any kinds of grants that would help them with the cost of this kind of work?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You should not need planning permission for internal alterations but works will require Building Control inspection to check any change to drainage and check access / fire escape to newly formed bedroom plus electrical works will need certification. There may be disabled adaptation grants available from your local council but these generally need support from your Doctor or Occupational Therapist

No planning permission is needed if the work is inside the house, you could draw up plans with your builder so long as you know exactly what you want, as for grants, I'm sorry I can't answer that question. Hope I've helped a little anyway. Dave, Direct Property Solutions.
