Insulation

Add insulation to bay?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hi - our front bedroom in 30s semi has a curved bay and is the coldest room in the house. The bay isn't brick - it is just a wooden framework with rendered outer and plaster on the inside. As I'm renovating, I've fitted a studwork wall, effectively squaring off the bay on the inside, so I can fit a double panel radiator (was a small curved single before) and also hopefully reduce heat loss through the bay. There is about a 6 inch void between the new plasterboard and the bay wall. My question is: would it be worth stuffing some loft insulation down inside the void to provide some additional insulation?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you could insulate the void you have but not fill it solid I would insulate tight to back of bay. Then leave a space behind the insulation and your new wall where you have squared it off put a window board on top paint and forget about it should be a lot warmer. Nigel

Using insulation boards such as celotex or kingspan between the studwork really help to keep things tidy. Leave a gap behind to allow airflow and restrict moisture build up. YouTube has plenty of videos which will help you.
