Smooth patches on wall after filling cracks

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

I have dug out and filled some cracks in the wall and then painted over them. The cracks re-appearing isn't the issue. The problem is that there are now obvious smooth patches on the wall, where I filled in the cracks and sanded. I tried using a long pile roller to give the patches some texture but it made no difference. What can I do to make the difference between where I have painted over the cracks and the remainder of the wall less noticeable?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there To be honest you either have to get and electric sander and sand all the walls back to completely flat which is a massive amount of work or else have all the walls skimmed to make it all even, unfortunately with this one its quite a lot of work either way and there's no other way around it other than the two iv stated good luck

Hi. There are a couple of options you may want to consider. 1. Surface the area. If you google 'sufacing walls' there is advice and videos on this, they primarily apply to textured surfaces but surfacing with dry-lining fller (easifill) or fine surface toupret, using these techniques can improve what you have considerably. 2. Paper the walls with lining paper, again plenty of tutorials online on this. Done well it can produce nice smooth even surfaces for painting. As always the prep is proportional to the quality of the finished job. Size the walls with pva diluted 1 part pva to 5 parts water. Use good ready mixed wallpaper adhesive and 1000 or 1200 grade lining paper when pasting pay particular attention to coverage of paste on the edges ( seams)
