Lay vinyl over ceramic tiles
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.34 PM
Several people have asked whether you can lay vinyl sheeting over ceramic tiles. The usual answer is no because the pattern will show through, so use a screed. Could one instead fill the joins between the tiles with grout or other material rather than coat the whole floor or would the job be easier with Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)?

Hi, The correct way to do this job is all according of the ceramic tiles are still down but solid you could prime the floor and then latex screed it so the screed does not blow. The other option would be to take up the ceramic tiles and then screed Flooring or use marine ply and screw the boards down and then feather edge the joints so they are nice and smooth. The other option would be to use a product called rapid set that is concrete wich you could use to put over the gaps were the tiles are it mixes with water and it will set in 15 to 20 mins once set you can use a rubbing down block to sand the rapid set flat and then lay your vinyl flooring over the top and again only if the tiles are fully secure to the sub floor. Hope this helpes thanks for reading Luke. L.G Flooring services

Both answers here are incorrect, please get a professional flooring installer to come and spec the sub-floor prep correctly, you do not ever use marine ply unless it's on an off shore installation you need SP101 ply. The tiles must be removed first, then the sub-floor will need to be inspected to give the correct information.

Hi There,
The correct way to this job would be to lift all the floor tiles, lay marine plyboard down and secure it with screws. Making sure the floor is level is vital when laying vinyl tiles. If the plyboard has been pulled down in some area because of the screws when securing it a levelling compound might need to be used. You then have the perfect base to lay your new vinyl flooring.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Scott
