painting partially varnished wood
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.37 PM
Hi I want to paint my skirting archs and doors, however some of it is varnished a light oak colour and some is bare. Ive looked online and some say to use an oil based primer some say to use an undercoat over varnished wood. I need to use primer for the bare wood anyway, so will primer be enough for the varnished part too? I want to paint them grey, and can only find water based grey shades, so will I be able to use water based wood paint over an oil primer? It has all been sanded down and smooth already.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there I used to teach painting and decorating so here is the answer.
Use an oil base paint primer as it contains more oil than an undercoat and will do a better job at sealing the stain.
Good luck.

Hi there the best primer to use on bare Wood to stop bleeding stains coming through and also for cohesion is red zinseer stain block ,it's a fantastic primer ,slightly expensive and pungent but worth it ,you can also put water/oil based paints on top, hope that helps for the future

Defo go down the bin zinners route slightly more expensive but the shellac will seal varnish, tried and tested, proven. over the years

Hi. Agree with the zinnser route, zinnser b.i.n i would go with as your primer. Its very high adhesion and seals knots etc. It will also work well with the water-based system you are planning on using.
Painting water based products onto an oil based undercoat is to be avoided.
