Checking for a concealed lintel
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM
I live in a bungalow built in the late 60s.I am having an extension built 3mx3m.a sliding patio door is being relocated into the build.the opening has what looks like a dummy lintel above as it only goes above the window and does not extend into the brickwork. Is there a concealed lintel in the brickwork and were lintels mandatory in building regulations at that time.I !I've in Biddulph staffs.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Martin,
The lintel would not be a dummy lintel. It may be the case that a narrower window was in place previously, or the correct lintel size was not put in, to carry sufficiently the above brickwork load onto the surrounding brickwork around the opening.
