How to tell if brick dividing wall is supporting wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

I want to remove a dividing wall between my kitchen and dining room of my bungalow. The wall is made of brick but property was built in late 60s early 70s. I’ve been in loft and it appears to have w trusses running parallel with the wall to be removed. I can’t see any evidence of a support joist or lintel and no rafters run over the wall. Other than employing structural engineer can I definitely tell for myself if it’s a supporting wall or not. Can’t access under wall as solid oak floors fitted. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you have been in your loft and there is nothing sat on the wall or it doesn't continue up into loft with a pearling or anything else sat on it and none of your ceiling joists are supported by it then sounds like you can remove. If you do it yourself, my advise is cut back ceiling to the joist away from wall leaving you room to dismantle from the top of the wall down. Hope this helps and wear protective gear!

There isn't really any need to look under wall weather load bearing or not .but as stated you have a w truss .and this runs parallel to the wall mentioned.this dose indicate that the wall is not load bearing.i would personally inspect the truss eather side of wall as these will carry new plasterboard to cover void left by the wall .and allso any adjoining 90°walls may loose some of there rigidity
