Change existing ceiling mounted extractor fan to inline unit in a block of flats with no loft access

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

As per the title, we live in a new build block with no loft above the bathroom ceiling. Bathroom has no window and the current extractor fan cannot clear the room of steam. We've honestly tried everything - showering with the door slightly ajar, shorter/colder showers, upgrading the extractor (was AirFlow Icon 15 but now AirFlow Icon 30), and I'm at my wits' end. I think the best option will be to move up to an in-line unit, I'm looking at either an AirFlow Avent 100T or a Manrose MF100T. I assume I am going to have to remove the ceiling to install and redecorate after, any tips for installing so I can get it right first time?

To verify if humid air is being drawn into the fan, hold a sheet of tissue to the grill, it should be able to hold the tissue, if not your duct is blocked. Make sure your fan is venting correctly first. Do your neighbours have similar problems?

If there no loft access an inline model will not be suitable as with any electrical item might need machanical maintenance and or testing and of course future replacement if the inline fan fails. You wouldn't want to remove the ceiling to access the fan motor. Suggestion would be to check the existing ducting is not blocked or restricted in any way and replace fan with a suitable high power surface mounted model with incorporates an over run timer set to Maximum ie a good 20mins.
