Fencing height between two gardens
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM
Can you please tell what the correct height the fence panels should be between my garden and the neighbours. Current have 3ft old rotten fencing panels in place.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Realistically you would use a 5ft/6ft fence in between properties to have more privacy, anything over 2 meters you would need planning permision,

There is no correct height with fence panels/boards, if you and your neighbour are happy and agreeable you can put up 6ft panels/boards.
Anything over 6ft and then you need permission from council..

You can build the fence to a height of 6 foot, and add a trellis of 12 inches to the top without planning permission. Anything higher will need permission from the council.

Maximum height you can go is 6ft6 without planning permission but I would speak with neighbours to discuss the height to try and avoid any issues so you both understand and agree the new height being installed, also make sure the post that used are sufficient enough to support the height such as correct thickness I wouldn't personally use anything but a minimum of 4x4 post on 5ft and above and the depth in the ground is usually 600mm up to a height of 6ft then 900mm anything over

Mutual decision between you and your neighbour ensuring you both agree on a height which does not exceed 6ft 6inches.
We personally do not usually exceed 6ft which allows an 8ft post to be creted/staked 2ft deep, leaving 6ft above ground level.

Whatever height you would like 6’6 is the highest you would be allowed without planning permission for privacy I would recommend going the 6’6 or just for style it’s whatever height you prefer below that
