Fitting cement board
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.16 PM
I’m about to start the tiling of my bathroom floor. I’m aware I need to fit a backer board to the plywood prior to tiling however do I just screw this into place or do I need to use adhesive first then screw? Also what sort of distance should I be leaving between gaps in the boards?

Providing your plywood is no less then 9mm thick (ideally 12mm for overboarding) and must be WBP and screwed down every 4 to 6 inches then as long as you use a good flexible tile adhesive and achieve a 100% coverage on each tile then there is no requirement for cement board on a floor.
Just remember to prime the back of the plywood before you install it and leave about a 3mm gap between boards and perimeter edges.
All the best

Never floor tile on subfloor plywood, I would use aqua panels or moist resistant wendi boards from tops tiles, along with a tanking kit that has washers, tape and paint to give it a good seal. Once that is in place you can start floortiling. Should there ever be a leak your subfloor will be protected. Hope that helps
