Block Paved Driveway

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

We had a block pave driveway laid 12th/13th/14th December but were advised it was too wet to finish with sand. We are still waiting. I wanted to know exactly how dry it needs to be? I’ve tried googling but varying answers. Is it damaging the driveway when it rains? We have an amazing driveway we can’t use! I’m really disappointed we weren’t advised that doing it in December maybe wasn’t a great idea. They’re the experts after all 😡

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, yes they probably are correct with regards to damp conditions as the kiln dried sand will just clump up. As long as the surface of the blocks are dry you can lay the kiln dried sand I normally lay the kiln dried and wacka the paviers leave a few days for sand to settle and go over once more to allow the sand to settle into joints. Couple dry days and job done. Hope this helps all the best.

Same as above, although I wouldn’t have wacked the drive without the sweeping sand as this locks it all in place so you don’t get any movement.

A dry day is required to allow the kiln dried sand to filter through the gaps in the block paving when this is swept in all gaps and crevices it is then compacted with a wacker plate to obtain a solid locked set of paving blocks which will ensure minimal movement .

Same as above, a dry day spread sand and light vibrate with a wacker, then top off with sand again once firm. In addition I would recommend a sealer to help with the longevity of your drive colourwise and also preventing any weeds settling in the top.

Think it's time one contact persons of work on drive. .as if sand is layed to deep . as an axample 50mm.to deep blocks will swim. At 20mm. Your natrale drainage would cope with rain. As to date saveire cold frost in ground could halt work. Put mined at rest of one completing works

Hi Couple of good dry days are required, to allow the sub base to dry before you can brush/compact the sand, otherwise you risk to undermine the sub base and shape of the finish paving, also ending up with puddles everywhere

No matter what you have to have complete dry weather when laying monoblock even when you are digging that 150ml the ground becomes a swamp you cannot use vibrating plate or even screed the sand dry weather is essential from start to finish
