TV aerial and signals within the home

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

Hello - would really appreciate some advice to understand our needs better prior to getting professional help. The aerial is in the loft and we have added a booster (mains operated) to which it is connected. We have aerial points in two areas of the home on the ground floor and signal in the main room is good; in an adjoining room because we've added a box to the main room connection point, getting a good signal is not always in the right position (think this may be because we have added an extension to the main aerial?). The upper floor TV gets its signal from a TV cable that goes up to the loft and connects to the booster. We done this ourselves. If the cable is curled, moved or just simply not too high or low we get NO signal whatsoever or we get limited TV channels etc. We think we need to do some tidying up around the house with the boxes here and there and cables hanging from the upper floor ceiling room to the TV. What do we need to do? We have two HD TVs, TalkTalk boxes, freeviews on both TVs... and our house is 30 years old and the booster and extra cabling for the upper floor done 15 years ago. Sorry long story, but we would be ever so grateful to learn a little before getting a pro. Thanks so much!

If anything it sounds like you need to spend some time and a lot of patience moving wires and boxes about until you get the best signal available. You can get little devices that cost about £10-20 that detect the signal and show it's strength which might help speed the process up. In reality that is all the professional will do but they will have one of these little devices, though probably a more expensive version... Granted they might find an obvious error like a kinked cable or cables crossing each other etc, but a few moments just looking at your cables should help on that front. Broken, kinked, badly made connections and wires crossing each other can all cause issues.

It's not always the aerial causing the issues, you can get packet loss on the cable, if they're of a substandard quality. You should certainly get someone to check the quality of cable that you have in, and also re-align the aerial. Did you choose the aerial yourself? Sometimes, people will choose a big aerial with loads of parts coming off, but they can add to the problems. You need to ensure the correct selection of equipment. High gain aerials in a strong signal area will not go well, and visa versa. If you had perfect signal on all TV's Prior to adding another, then it must be installers error. Which could be easily fixed, but i'd certainly be interested to get a Analyser on it to check your quality.
