Fitting lintels.

Hi I am looking to insert lintels on top of upstairs windows and door downstairs. The house is 1930s. The windows are old and no lintels were fitted when someone changed them. I am told by the builder that L shape lintels will be fitted and price seems reasonable to me. My only doubt is ..the builder told me the brick work does not need to be supported. .he will remove one two or few layers of bricks and insert steel lintels. ..will this be ok? Wall is solid no cavity. Also I have building regulations people booked so they will visit at the time of the work.

I live in a 1940's house and a put 2 new concrete lintels over my internal door after I'd built a new porch. A lot depends on the state of the brickwork ? Personally I always support the brickwork above with a prop . The worst possible case if you don't support the above brickwork is a course or two will drop but if your builder is prepared to rebuild the brickwork at no extra cost then ok. I personally always support the brickwork with props when doing this kind of work.

Depending on the width of the opening, you can remove bricks without support, on a 9'' wall any size over 750mm i would suggest needs at least one support. i hope this is useful to you.

With any opening I would support small or big as at the end of the day you are in someone's home and you have to make it safe and secure even if you know 9 times out of ten your certain it will be fine
