Over-boarding wooden boiler cupboard in bathroom with plywood...will it swell?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hi, I'm going to be over boarding an existing ceiling cupboard in the bathroom which houses the boiler with plywood, because it looks awful at the moment. My question is, how much of a gap should I leave between plywood and the tiled wall or will i be alright boarding right up to the wall? The cupboard won't be near splashing water and we have an extractor fan. Any advice will be much appreciated! Cheers, Shaun.

Hi Shaun, If you really must board up against the tiles I would recommend leaving at least a couple of mm between so that air can still travel, if you put the plywood up against the tiles their is a good chance that condensation and mold will form and rot the new plywood (even with an extractor fan) also for bathroom applications purchase some marine ply, this plywood is still as strong as standard ply and can withstand a lot more, conditions such as condensation, water ingress, etc. Regards, QuickfixLTD
