Loft Conversion

Chimney breast in loft...

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

I am looking at converting the loft in my 1940s terraced house to a dormer with ensuite (shower only). The question I have is regarding the chimney breast that's in the loft. When we purchased the house last year the building survey indicated that the chimney breast had been removed on the ground and first floor and that the top of the stack that remained in the loft requires an upgrade to its support from cantilevered steel bars to a steel beam rested across exterior walls. Would aloft conversion company perform this upgrade or better still could the remaining chimney stack be removed completely? I believe its a shared chimney with the neighbour. Any guidance would be gratefully received

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The conversion people would be more than likely of doing either job, but I'd get rid of the stack and be done with it if it was my job. So long as you tell the people who quote to do the job know that the job includes removing the chimney and replacing the hole with some new tiles/slates then you will be fine.

This is a shared chimney with next door which means you could not remove the chimney at roof level. However, once you have put the steels in for your loft conversion you could potentially use these to support off with another steel. But this likely would need calculations from a structural engineer. We are a loft conversion specialist and have dealt with this issue many times. We would price it inclusive of the entire loft conversion for you. Oakwoodhill Construction
