Is it possible to lay wet system underfloor heating when floor is raw floorboards?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi, I am in the middle of buying a new house and me and my wife are considering using underfloor heating in the house. On the ground floor there is nothing but raw floor boards at the moment and there is then a big gab down to the bottom on the house (not a basement) I reckon the gab is about 1.5 meter long. I only choose wet system as i have heard this is much cheaper to run, can anyone confirm that electric underfloor heating is still much more expensive to run? Ronnie

If you did what lcal maintenance solutions suggested yu wuld have a very inefficient bodged heating system as their would be no insulation beneath the pipes to reflect heat upwards and holes for pipes could weaken joists too much - needs properly doing andy

Hi Ronnie, Yes, you are right, electric underfloor is alot more expensive to run than the wet system. There should be no problem laying underfloor heating beneath floorboards; its just a case of either cutting notches out of the joists to allow the pipe to run (the gap should then be covered with steel bar to ensure no weak points or squeaky boards). The other method is simply using a spade bit or auger bit to drill holes through the joists. This may be difficult without the correct kit!. Good luck!
