Are flat roof chippings always necessary

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Our roofer has told us that we don’t require chippings on our new flat roof due to the quality of the felt he has used. There are two torched on layers with the top layer being a green mineral felt which I must say does look very smart? The roof covers quite a large area and incorporates an existing garage roof which had no chippings either.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the chips act as a barrier between non solar reflective felt and the sun, (basically help prolong its life span of the felt), if its green mineral on your new roof you will not have to chip it as the minerals are solar reflective. hope this helps. regards blair

Basically if the felt has not been top coated with nonreflective paint then yes chipping are a form of barrier holding a small percentage of water. Hope this was helpful Regards David
