Restoration & Refurbishment

Extensive renovation needed after water damage

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.34 PM

A hot water tank which was in the attic has burst and proceeded to flood the two floors underneath. Carpets and walls are completely drenched and the ceiling has collapsed in the living room. This is a terraced house probably around 100 years old. It's the family home and we are absolutely gutted it happened around new year. The repairs will hopefully be covered by insurers, what other alternatives are there?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

My recommendation would be to ensure that the source of the leak is cut off and that you remove all damp /wet coverings as much as possible (like carpets etc). If you have not done so already hire some dehumidifiers from a tool hire company and install them in all the affected rooms. This will help the rooms to dry out quicker and mean that your builder will be able to start the repairs earlier. Your house needs to be dry before your builder can start the repairs. Keep your receipts for the insurance company. I hope this helps. Angus from Knoetze Builders

Agree with Knoetze.ltd. the sooner de-humidifiers are up and running the better. Some insurance companies arrange this for you

I would also be wary of asbestos before you start drying the air out from anywhere a ceiling has collapsed. In a house 100 years old the chances of there being asbestos in the plaster are pretty high.
