Privacy screening and noise block for exterior house/garden
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.36 PM
I currently live in a detached house with a garage at the side, on a busy junction. The garage is the closest part of the plot to the road. I am looking to reduce noise and increase privacy. At the side of the house I would like to block noise and add artificial screening on top of the garage to provide privacy to some bedroom windows facing a busy road. - what types of materials should I use? how should it be secured on top of the garage? Are there any other cost effective alternatives?

For noise reduction you have three options, firstly a hard surface to bounce noise away, second is a soft surface to absorb the noise and third is a mixture of the two.
Hard surfaces can be angled so things like glass, stone, brick, etc. Angle them so that they deflect noise away from you. Even a slight angle will work well.
Soft surfaces like soil, fencing, foliage, artificial grass, etc will help to absorb noise.
If you have the space, then an embankment of soil with a fence or wall on top and thick hedges either side of the fence or wall and planting on the embankment is about as good as it gets.
If the garage has a good enough roof then you can bolt down fence panels for privacy. You can get privacy film to put over glass, but be warned that it does not work so well if it is dark outside and you have a light on!
You could fit something like vertical louvres to stop people being able to see in from the road but will not reduce light too much and you will be able to see the other way quite well.
Secondary glazing can work well to reduce noise too...
