Chimney Support

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.33 PM

Have both chimney breasts removed from a terraced house. What is the best way to support remaining chimney breast in the loft? My builder has moved on so need expert guidance. Previous builder and structural engineer had applied to the council for two 5 metre steel beams. As all the work below is complete and any steel beams will have to be brought in by crane and scaffolding via lifting the roof and fairly costly. Any guidance will be appreciated. The house is a 1930s in Sutton Surrey with a V facing down chimney breast. Thanks

Generally these days’ councils don’t like to see gallows brackets used if it can be avoided but I recently done a drawing for such a job whereby gallows brackets with RSJ's and flat plate over was acceptable to Sutton Council. Sometimes it may be more cost effective, particularly if there is a double chimney to run full length RSJ's from wall plate to wall plate. Depending on the specification of the RSJ's required, a crane may be needed to lift into place but not necessarily as shorter RSJ’s can be manually handled and simply bolted together with plates. An example for a 5 meter span would be 3 number 1.66 meter RSJ's which two men should be easily able to handle into place and bolt together in the loft hence saving on costly scaffolding and crane hire.

If its just an average size chimney breast then a wood beam bedded into the wall along sde the existing joist going underneath the brick work that is stuck out from the chimney wall to support the chimney also bolt joists together aswell

gallow brackets bolted to the wall with a couple of concrete lintels on them. this should have been done before it all came down as there is now nothing supporting the chimney stack at all!

Gallows brackets as stated above is the way to do it ,plus you can dry pack between lintel and brickwork to give better support .
