Unscrewing bath plug caused a leak in downstairs flat.

Hi, Our bath would not drain therefore we unscrewed the bath drain in order to clear it of hair & gunk. Shortly after, whilst the washing machine was on, it resulted in the bath drain gurgling and then a leak in the downstairs flat. We have been advised by our landlady's handyman that unscrewing the drain opened a valve which caused the waste water to leak and there is no problem with the pipes. Is this possible? We are concerned of causing further leaks downstairs and possibly looking to hire a plumber ourselves to check it out. Thanks

the screw holds the trap on underneath the bath it is possible that increasing it could have caused the trap to separate slightly causing the leak... first thing to do it remove the bath panel and take a look under the bath.. if nothing looks obvious slowly pour water down the plug and see what happens

When you unscrewed the bath drain do you mean the bath trap ? If so make sure it’s done up tight and you didn’t cross thread it or loose the black rubber o ring as it will leak without this. If you can’t see what’s wrong and it’s still leaking then call a plumber as it will be cheaper than the redecorating bill from downstairs 🙁
