How to get soft, even, flat finished walls with crisp new cornices?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
I have a Victorian property but my walls are uneven with an occasional bulge in certain areas. How do I get that plain, flat and soft (almost New Build like) finish? The dado rail running horizontally in the middle of the room is also not up to standard and does not have a crisp new finish - does this need replacing all together or can it be restored by way of repair. The same goes for the corners of the skirting throughout the room. Any advise here is much appreciated. Thanks, Amit

Hi if you want that new build finish i would suggest having your walls replastered. I have done several house renovations which you can see examples of on our page. To really get that flat Matt finish I would normally replace the skirtings with pre primed mdf. The walls you mentioned are bulging in places which I expect will be blown plaster which means the original backing plaster has come loose from the brickwork behind. You can tell this if you gently tap the area and it sounds hollow behind. In this case I would recommend overboarding before skimming with new plaster. Hope this helps.

You need to tear down the old lath & plaster which is unfortunate as plasterers these days don't do repairs like the old days. It would need to be replaced with plasterboard then I would suggest you skim the walls to get a really good finish, then paint as normal.
