Smoking smell in the house

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

I have just bought a house that used to belong to a chain smoker! im in the process of getting the carpets changed and walls repainted to get rid of the smell. The nicotine staining is only bad in one room the others are fine. The question I have do I need to use a special undercoat or sealant such as https://www.screwfix.com/p/zinsser-b-i-n-shellac-based-primer-sealer-white-1ltr/29661 on every wall or just the stained room to get rid of the smell?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Difficult to definitively advise without seeing, but the general advise with nicotine is: If nicotine atained walls/ceilings are painted with emulsion then the nicotine is activated by the water in the paint and burns through changing the colour. So if it can be washed off then wash first with a strong sugar soap solution then clean water till removed. Some surfaces/paints absorb the nicotine so that means it cant be washed off so the zinnser b.i.n you suggested would be a goos choice. Its the best stain blocker there is and is the only one that blocks smells too. Zinnser also do a ceiling paint (all-in-one, stain blocker, finishing emulsion) it may be worth you looking at that too. Sometimes with extreem nicotine staining and on surfaces such as those painted with vinyl paint, ive found it has to be washed off. There is actually a residue thats greasy and you cant be certain that any primer would stick to it. So all the immportant personal protection gloves etc and wash it all down, unpleasant process but sometimes has to be done. Even after washing down some staining can remain so prime as you have suggested

You need to check your doors. Mostly wooden doors can easily keep the odours. Repaint the doors and clean the windows edges.

Just give all previously painted surfaces a coat of thinned down oil based white undercoat .
