Turn off upstairs taps causes electric shower leak

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Yesterday i turned off the sink tap in my ensuite and my electric ahower sprouted a leak from inside the ahower unit. I turned off the mains supply and it stopped. I turned the main supply back on as I couldn't see anything wrong and when I turned the water back on it was fine. I had a shower last night as normal and it was fine. This morning my wife was in our upstairs bathroom and again when she turned off the tap in there, the same thing happened with the shower. I had already used the ensuite taps a few moments before with no problem. Again i turned off the mains water supply and it stopped and turned it back on and it was fine. I know the last 2 mornings have been extremely cold and I wonder if this has anything to do with it? Can anyone help?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like you have a seal that is not quite right. When the taps are being turned off they create what is called a water hammer effect. This is when the water flowing is topped quite suddenly and a pressure wave is sent back up the pipe. In your case I expect that when you turn the taps off the supply pipes are having this pressure wave and pushing water out where a seal has got old. Should be a reasonably easy fix... Turn the water and electric off, take the front off the shower and look at the connections where the water is attached from the pipes to the shower unit. At least one is likely to be loose. You might need to replace this bit of pipe or just tighten the connection.
