Add an extra storey to a flat roof in block of flats, share of freehold
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.33 PM
We are about to buy a flat in a block from the 70's . The flat is the 3rd and 4th floor and there is nobody above us, the roof is flat. We have been dreaming about the idea of extending and adding another storey. I understand we will have to pay the other freeholders and get permission. (It's share of freehold.) We understand we will have to apply for planning permission too. Is it at all technically possible? The total size of the roof is 120 m2, our flat is just below half of it. Would it most likely need underpinning? Any ideas of a ballpark figure? Any experience shared would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is possible.
You would need to get a structural engineer to look at the situation and offer their advice on how it could be done.
Start by having a chat with your Local Planning Authority, which is usually free to start with, and ask for their opinion and for who they might suggest for an engineer to come and have a look at the project.
The engineer will charge, and probably quite a lot, but it would answer your questions by the time the planning folks and the engineer has finished.
