Central Heating

Room thermostat

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.13 PM

I am in a private let two bedroom flat. In April this year the old back boiler was condemned by British Gas so my landlord hired a private firm to install a new combi boiler. I've had no problem with the functioning of the boiler but now that I require the heating on at different times of the day, the fact that I don't have a room thermostat is hugely inconvenient ie the heating either has to be on or off and therefore I can't maintain an even comfortable temperature. Should a room thermostat have been fitted at the time of installation as a legal requirement? I'd be grateful for any advice, thanks. Thank you Crown Property Developments for your response. There were however no new radiator valves fitted at the time of installation. The radiators are the original old ones with old valves so hard to regulate.

Hi Shish Part L of the Building Regulations refer to the "Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide" as a means for complying with the regulations. When fitting a replacement boiler a "boiler interlock" must be incorporated. The minimum for this would be a room thermostat which would switch off the boiler and pump when there is no demand for heating. Thermostatic radiator valves on there own would not comply. Regards Roy

No, it is highly likely that thermostatic radiator valves have been fitted instead to provide more local control - these can be found on one side of each radiator and can be adjusted from off, or frost protection, through a rising numbers sequence, to the highest/warmest setting. Adjust these to control your heating. Hope this helps. 2nd part of answer to revised question: It seems that they were relying on new combi boiler on-board timeclock controls and thermostat - your heating should be able to be controlled from the boiler - if it hasn't got such controls then they should have fitted remote thermostat and timeclock control to be compliant.
